Sixty-one people have been killed in the floods occurring in Côte d'Ivoire since mid-May, marking the beginning of the heavy rainy season. The government has expressed its regret over the high toll, as rains continue and floods recur in the capital, Abidjan, which is home to six million inhabitants. The government is carrying out evacuation and demolition operations in the affected impoverished areas, with no casualties reported in neighborhoods where residents have adhered to safety instructions.
