Hurricane "Lorraine" struck the islands west of Hawaii, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rains, leading to power outages for thousands of residents and damaging parts of the coastal roads on the island of Kauai, which is home to approximately 73,000 people. The winds caused trees to be uprooted and damaged the electrical network, with the utility cooperative reporting that nearly all of its approximately 35,000 members were without power. Emergency officials called on residents to conserve water and avoid using roads while assessing the damage. This event occurs in the context of a rare phenomenon caused by rising sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean due to the "El Niño" pattern, which has led to three hurricanes in the area, including "Lorraine," as well as hurricanes "Karen" and "Marily."
