Researchers from the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have developed new antibodies that may help prevent Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), one of the most widespread viruses among adults. EBV remains in the body for life and is linked to certain types of cancers and multiple sclerosis. The research team targeted two key proteins involved in infecting cells, namely "gp350" and "gp42." They isolated ten antibodies, two of which target "gp350" and eight target "gp42." Results showed that one of the anti-"gp42" antibodies successfully prevented infection by the virus, while another offered partial protection. These findings represent an important step toward developing preventive or therapeutic methods in the future, especially for at-risk groups such as transplant patients and children. However, the study is still in its early stages and requires additional clinical testing.
