A U.S. Federal Court has ruled that an order issued by the Secretary of Energy to keep the JH Campbell coal power plant in Michigan running beyond the scheduled closure date last year is invalid. The judge stated that federal energy law only authorizes the issuance of emergency orders for essential situations, and there was no genuine emergency justifying the plant remaining operational, indicating that the department exceeded its authority. The court considered continued operation of the plant unjustified, describing it as a narrowly targeted emergency measure used as a last resort. Consequently, the court upheld the objections of the states and environmental groups to the department’s decision.
