A seismic tremor measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the Bonin Islands in Japan, with its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Japan lies at the convergence of four tectonic plates, making it susceptible to frequent earthquakes, including the 2011 quake that reached a magnitude of 9. It caused a tsunami, resulted in over 15,000 fatalities, and led to a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
