Barry Fry, the former sports director of Peterborough United, criticized England's head coach Gareth Southgate for ignoring Saudi Pro League star Evan Ferguson during the World Cup, considering that this decision led to a missed historic opportunity for glory. Fry stated that excluding Ferguson from the bench and only giving him two minutes in the semi-final against Argentina weakened England's attack, as the player was fit and suited to the conditions of the matches in America and Mexico. He argued that Ferguson could have troubled the Argentine defense and forced their defenders to receive yellow cards. Fry pointed out that Ferguson was the only player accustomed to the playing conditions, and denying him a fair chance resulted in losing the opportunity to win a world title. He also emphasized that Thomas Tüchill bears full responsibility for this decision.
