Japan has announced the discovery of rare earth elements on the ocean floor off a remote island in the Pacific, aiming to diversify sources of minerals essential for defense and automotive industries. Approximately 50 tons of mud containing elements such as ytterbium, gadolinium, and dysprosium have been collected; these are used in aviation, space, energy, and semiconductors. This discovery is expected to contribute to increasing the production of rare minerals, although current data are insufficient to accurately determine the size of the deposits due to limited samples and locations. Japan had previously tested a continuous extraction process in February from depths reaching six kilometers, marking the world's first successful operation of its kind in this field.
