Australia issues warning on rare visual issues linked to diabetes drugs
The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has issued a warning regarding the potential link between some medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, particularly those in the GLP-1 class, and a rare condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which can lead to permanent vision loss. Australia has reported 36 cases of this rare condition that causes vision loss, with no proven treatment available to restore sight after the injury. This warning is part of preventive measures to raise awareness and monitor drug safety, as experts confirm that the condition is extremely rare.
