IOM Warns of Rising Fraud in Middle East Crises
The International Organization for Migration warns that economic and political conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa are increasing the vulnerabilities of individuals to exploitation by criminal networks, particularly through cyber fraud and human trafficking. It explained that traffickers lure victims with fake job offers and force them to engage in criminal activities, such as online scams. The crises have caused millions to flee their homes and have weakened protective systems, making migrants more susceptible to exploitation. Last year, losses from fraud crimes alone totaled approximately $40 billion globally. Since 2022, the organization has provided assistance to over 3,500 victims, focusing on enhancing protection and strengthening oversight agencies to prevent the spread of this phenomenon.
