Kingdom shifts to maritime security leadership
The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced the appointment of Major Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shahrani as the commander of the Multinational Maritime Defensive Coalition, which was established on July 30 with the participation of 14 countries. The coalition's aim is to protect vital maritime corridors through which a significant portion of the world's trade and energy pass, especially in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, amid escalating security challenges such as Houthi militias targeting oil ships. This appointment represents an important step toward activating a multi-national defense system that enhances the readiness of participating entities to safeguard energy routes and secure international trade movements, at a time when the security of these passages faces persistent threats related to terrorist activities and regional tensions.
