The Disciplinary Committee of Major League Soccer has imposed a fine on Argentine star Lionel Messi, the amount of which has not been disclosed, due to him slapping Philadelphia Union player Quin Sullivan on the neck during a match that ended in a 2-2 draw. The referee did not issue a warning to Messi during the incident, but reacted angrily by physically confronting the player, slapping Sullivan with an open hand after a pass from the latter. Footage showed that the incident resulted from a verbal dispute, with Sullivan reacting angrily before the referee intervened, who then canceled the red card. It is believed that the punishment includes a one-game suspension and a fine, with exceptions governed by an independent review panel. Messi is known to be one of the most disciplined players, having received only four red cards throughout his career by the 2025-2026 season, and his behavior during this match was considered unusual.
