Early Atherosclerosis Signs in Youth

An international study has shown that silent atherosclerosis begins at early stages of life, with plaque buildup inside the arteries found among young people who do not have any symptoms. The study revealed that 57.1% of more than 16,000 participants, aged between 18 and 70 years, display signs of arteriosclerosis, with these signs appearing very early in individuals as young as 18 to 29. The prevalence increases with age, reaching 90% among those aged 60 to 70. The results also indicated that men tend to develop atherosclerosis about 5 to 10 years earlier than women. Conversely, infection rates in women rise between the ages of 40 and 60, especially after menopause. The researchers emphasized that traditional assessment methods may not adequately detect silent atherosclerosis, calling for the use of direct artery scans with portable ultrasound devices. These findings represent an important step toward the second phase of the study, which will investigate the effectiveness of early therapeutic interventions in halting or reversing the progression of arterial sclerosis.
