Africa's Hot Rocks Breakdown
The modern study relies on 3D models and measurements taken over more than 12 years to confirm that the flow of hot rocks from deep within the Earth gradually contributes to the fracturing of the African continent by moving rocks away from the East African Rift system, which is the largest continental rift system in the world. Scientists believe that this movement of rocks is linked to the African Superplume, a massive mass of hot mantle material extending from southwestern Africa towards the northeast, potentially leading to the separation of parts of the continent after millions of years.
