A ferry sinking accident occurred in Indonesia, where the vessel sank in the Java Sea due to bad weather conditions and high waves, resulting in the death of 6 people and the loss of about 130 others out of the 243 passengers onboard. The ferry had departed from Surabaya heading toward Pangkajene before losing contact due to rough seas, which caused the ship to tilt. Rescue teams have been able to save 107 people so far, and search and recovery operations are ongoing to find the missing. Meanwhile, the relatives of the passengers are gathering, awaiting information about their loved ones. This incident comes amidst a series of ferry accidents in Indonesia and has raised criticisms regarding safety standards in maritime transportation across the archipelago, which consists of over 17,000 islands.
