The European Union member states extended sanctions against Russia for another week until September 22, in order to approve their six-month renewal, which includes around three thousand individuals and companies. The delay was due to a disagreement over removing the name of Russian-Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov from the list, as France and Slovakia demanded his removal for national security reasons, despite Usmanov currently being subject to sanctions that include asset freezes and travel bans. Usmanov is facing legal challenges to contest the sanctions imposed on him and is active in the metals and media sectors.
