Why is Life or Death the sole Oscar contender
The Saudi film "A Matter of Life or Death" has been selected to represent the Kingdom officially in the Oscar race for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. The selection was based on the film’s extensive achievements over the past year, including its world premiere at the Red Sea Film Festival, its success at the Saudi Film Festival where its star, Sarah Taiba, won the Best Acting Award, and a special commendation from the jury. The film is distinguished by its blend of fantasy, imagination, and human honesty, offering a lively depiction of Jeddah. Its runtime is one hour and fifty-five minutes. Although the official selection criteria have not been disclosed, the film’s track record and numerous awards throughout the year strengthen its chances of being nominated. The final nominations will be announced in January, with the winners expected to be announced in March 2027.
