A sexual assault complaint has been filed against Ryan Mendes, the captain of the Cape Verde national team, in New Zealand by a Brazilian woman who was working as a translator during the team's camp before the 2026 World Cup. The New Zealand police have stated that they are investigating the incident, which occurred at a hotel in Auckland last March, and that the victim has sent requests to exclude Mendes from the tournament. However, the New Zealand Football Association and the Cape Verde Football Federation have not commented on the matter yet. Mendes is considered a key player for his national team, which has reached the Round of 32 for the first time in its history.
