Moroccan team defeated the Dutch team in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup via penalty shootout, leading to widespread celebrations in Morocco and abroad. However, the festivities turned into tension and some violent incidents in certain areas of the Netherlands, where police intervened to disperse celebrators using water cannons. This situation sparked racist statements from far-right party leader Geert Wilders, who called for the deportation of troublemakers and their families back to Morocco. Despite that, Dutch voices increasingly criticized the generalization about Moroccans and emphasized the importance of distinguishing individual behavior from the broader community, in the ongoing debate around migration and integration in the country.
