The European Football Union "UEFA" has confirmed that it will not enforce the rule of sending off players who cover their mouths while communicating with opponents in its continental competitions. This comes after controversy surrounding its application at the 2026 World Cup. Referees will evaluate each case individually, with the possibility of issuing a yellow card if it is deemed an attempt to conceal communication in an unsportsmanlike manner. However, the right to investigate and impose penalties when necessary will still be maintained. UEFA also decided not to enforce the rule of sending off players who leave the field in protest of refereeing decisions, focusing instead on the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to review and make decisions.
