Luka Modric, captain of the Croatian national team, expressed his dissatisfaction with the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology after his team’s 2-1 loss to Portugal in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. He criticized the refereeing decisions that led to a penalty awarded to Portugal, affirming that his team’s performance deserved a better outcome, and noted that technical interventions are often inaccurate or selective, affecting match results and tournament progress. Despite the elimination, Modric praised the level of performance of the Croatian players in the game and stated that he has not made a decision about his international future yet.
