The Egyptian national team achieved unprecedented records at the 2026 World Cup, qualifying for the Round of 16 for the first time and accomplishing several historic milestones in the match against Australia. Among these was the participation of a young player for the first time in an knockout game without having played any official club matches. Imam Ashour scored Egypt's first goal in the knockout stages in 92 years. Egypt also became the third African team to reach this stage via penalty shootout, while Mohamed Hany scored an own goal, making him the second player to score two own goals in a single tournament. The Egyptian team is expected to face the winner between Argentina and Cape Verde in the quarter-finals.
