German player Alexander Zverev, ranked second in the world, faced difficulty in qualifying for the second round of the US Open after winning against Italian Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 ("7-9"), 7-5, 6-4, despite having previously won the French Open in June and reaching the Wimbledon final in July. Zverev entered the tournament as the top seed due to Yannick Sinner's absence caused by injury, and he displayed inconsistent performance during the match. Also advancing easily to the next round were Elena Rybakina, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, and 2023 champion Coco Gauff, with expectations that Rybakina's ranking would rise to world number one if she reaches the semifinals.
