Historic Contract Ends Benzema's Dream
A news report revealed Olympique Lyon's attempts this summer to bring Karim Benzema back to their squad, given that he had been present in their ranks throughout his career. The player was eager to return and comfortable with the idea of playing again for his old club, even willing to go through the season without a salary out of love for the club. However, this desire was hindered by Benzema's commitment to a contract with the Saudi league until 2030, where he serves as a brand ambassador for the competition, preventing him from signing with any other club at the moment. Benzema, who became a free agent about a week ago after terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, intended to return to Lyon. Nonetheless, the main obstacle was his obligation to the Saudi league, despite his deep connection to the club and memories with it, and his view that ending his career at Lyon would be without financial compensation.
