The article discusses the new amendments approved by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to the refereeing rules in the UEFA Champions League starting from the 2026-2027 season. The goal is to improve the relationship with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, reduce time-wasting, and make controversial decisions more accurately. Among the significant changes are awarding a penalty kick if a defender touches the ball inside the penalty area after the goalkeeper played it with their foot, implementing a unified approach to covering the mouth while talking between players, and improving substitution procedures by speeding up players' exit from the field after a substitution. Additionally, the time allowed for throw-ins and goal kicks has been reduced to five seconds. The amendments also include procedures for reviewing errors related to identity and conflicting sanctions before play begins, canceling incorrect corner kicks, and strengthening the use of video technology for more precise error correction. Furthermore, players covering their mouths while speaking will no longer be penalized with a red card unless their actions are deemed unsporting. These rules aim to reduce subjective judgments and enhance the accuracy and transparency of refereeing in matches.
