Athletic reports breach in Pinto City
An Athletic Network report revealed that Manchester City was subjected to a cyber breach in January 2017 through an email linked to the European Football Union. Portuguese individual Ruy Pinto illegally accessed and stole the club's financial data, then leaked it to the German magazine Der Spiegel. Nearly a decade later, an independent arbitration panel convicted the club of violating its financial regulations. Investigations by the English Premier League confirmed that Manchester City attempted to obstruct the investigations and significantly inflated their commercial revenues, with fake figures exceeding £830 million, while the European Union estimated the actual number to be around £300 million. The club appealed the decision, and several club officials testified as witnesses, but discrepancies in their statements emerged. Questions were raised regarding the staff’s knowledge of the club’s internal affairs, with both parties choosing not to comment on the details.
