Savilar: Italy's top goalkeeper without national duty
Roma goalkeeper Maël Svilari is experiencing a unique situation. Although he is considered one of Europe's top goalkeepers, he is currently unable to represent any national team due to FIFA regulations. After switching his allegiance from Belgium to Serbia by participating in a friendly match with the Serbian national team in 2021, he later attempted to return to playing for Belgium. However, FIFA rejected his request, as the federation's rules state that players who change their national association and participate in an official match after the age of 21 are not eligible to revert to their previous association. As a result, he is currently barred from playing for any national team, despite having been named the best goalkeeper in the Italian league twice. His situation highlights the complex intersection of international regulations and the realities faced by players who switch their national teams, leaving him with no option but to remain on the sidelines of international competition.
