Italy football chief ousted amid legal crisis
The Italian National Olympic Committee has ousted Giovanni Malago, the president of the Football Federation, after less than four months of his election, due to a legal flaw in his administrative position at the time of the election, as he was not registered as a member of the federation when he ran. The Committee decided to impose an exceptional management on the federation, which means ending Malago's term and initiating a transitional period lasting three months, during which new elections will be held before the end of January 2024. Although he has been removed from the presidency, Malago is permitted to oversee the federation’s management as a commissioner during the transitional period, leaving open the possibility of his return to the position if he runs again and wins after his legal status is rectified. This crisis comes at a sensitive time for Italy, which faces organizational challenges for UEFA Euro 2032, including upcoming infrastructure changes to stadiums, while the federation works to realign its legal and administrative frameworks.
