CAF May Return AFCON to Biennial
The African Football Confederation (CAF) is seeking to reconsider its previous decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, as discussions are underway regarding returning to its traditional biennial format. This change comes less than ten months after the initial decision, which had sparked widespread protests across the continent. The shift is linked to escalating disagreements between the global governing body (FIFA) and the European counterpart (UEFA). Currently, at a conference in Cape Verde, there is an ongoing debate about restoring the tournament to its traditional schedule, with a potential vote by the executive committee on the matter. This comes amid ongoing tensions between FIFA and UEFA, which have led to renewed discussions about the tournament's organizational structure and its impact on commercial negotiations, broadcasting rights, and sponsorship deals. The previous schedule change had resulted in significant losses for CAF, exceeding one billion dollars.
