Scout and agent roles in player discovery
The article discusses the role of scouts and agents in the football transfer market, with a focus on how talents are discovered and evaluated, and the material and moral gains achieved by each party. It explains how scouts contribute to uncovering emerging players and how the responsibilities and duties of scouts and agents vary, along with the fees they receive, which reached approximately $1.37 billion globally in 2025, with significant disparities in the distribution of these funds. The article also highlights the importance of analyzing matches and players’ technical and physical abilities by scouts, and how such analysis can aid in contract decision-making or coaching strategies. It concludes by emphasizing that the success of a deal and the quality of evaluation offer substantial financial and qualitative benefits to clubs, as excellent recommendations can generate revenues of millions of dollars. However, the share of that revenue received by the scout or agent depends on several factors and varies according to each one's role in the transfer process.
