FIFA Council convenes amid pressure on Infantino
FIFA President Gianni Infantino faced fierce criticism after failing to implement his plans to increase private sector participation in the World Cup and other competitions. This occurred during the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich. Among the items on the agenda, discussions centered on the "FIFA Forward" project, which is considered a failure, as well as the FIFA Peace Award, which was awarded to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting also addressed the efforts of Infantino's opponents to push for reforms in FIFA's structure, aimed at reducing the powers of the President and leaving daily affairs to the Council—an initiative Infantino strongly opposes. The organization is under pressure from UEFA and European nations to find new leadership figures known for their integrity. Meanwhile, Infantino remains influential in Asia, Africa, and South America, as the upcoming presidential elections in March 2024 draw near.
