FIFA Updates Rules After 2026 Crisis
The decision by FIFA to reactivate the participation of American player Folarin Balogun in World Cup matches despite his being sent off in the previous game sparked widespread controversy, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump admitted to intervening in the matter. This intervention led to criticism from the Belgian Football Union, which called for clarification of the decision-making procedures and assurances that such incidents would not be repeated, expressing disagreement with the legal interpretation that allowed his participation despite the red card. In response to this controversy, FIFA announced its intention to amend Article 27 of its disciplinary regulations to enhance transparency and impartiality in future decisions. The amendment will be presented to the upcoming Union Council for approval, as a step to reaffirm the independence of disciplinary bodies and their commitment to transparency.
