Premier League adopts new winning culture
The article explains that the style of ball possession in the English Premier League has experienced a noticeable decline in recent seasons. The average possession percentage of winning teams dropped below 50% for the first time since 2016, just before the start of the 2023-2024 season. This reflects a shift among many teams to avoid excessive control and instead focus on counter-attacks to secure victory. Although the famous football coach Pep Guardiola was known for his possession-based approach, recent performance indicates that winning does not always require complete reliance on ball retention. Instead, there has been an increase in chances and shots resulting from counter-attacks. The Saudi team Al-Taawoun records the highest possession percentage in the Saudi Pro League (57.5%), despite their lower position in the standings. Data suggests that a decrease in possession does not negatively impact match results. Many teams following different tactical styles are achieving victories, highlighting a transformation in playing strategies in the English Premier League and tactical plans in general.
