FIFA suspends Hossam Hassan and others after Argentina crisis
The Disciplinary Committee of the International Football Federation (FIFA) has decided to suspend Hossam Hassan, the head coach of the Egyptian national team, and his brother Ibrahim Hassan, the team manager, for three matches each. Additionally, player Mostafa Mohamed "Zico" has been suspended for five matches. These penalties come in connection with the events that occurred during the Egypt-Argentina match in the 2026 World Cup. The sanctions follow criticism and statements from the coaching staff and players regarding the referees' decisions and objections to how the match was managed. The case dates back to Egypt's 2-3 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16, prompting FIFA to initiate disciplinary procedures after investigating the comments and incidents surrounding the confrontation. The committee did not disclose specific details of the violations, but the punishments will affect the trio’s participation in the Egyptian team’s upcoming matches, unless an appeal is filed or any suspension is temporarily halted.
