Stimulants sidelined world champion
The Athletics Integrity Unit has temporarily suspended Kenyan runner Peres Jepchirchir, the world marathon champion and Tokyo 2021 Olympic gold medalist, after traces of the banned substance "EPO" were detected in her pre-race doping test conducted before the Sydney Marathon, which she won on August 30. This comes after Jepchirchir achieved numerous victories and records, including her world title in the 2025 Tokyo Marathon and a world record in the half marathon. Kenya has faced a rising number of doping cases over the past several years, with more than 140 athletes sanctioned for banned substance use since 2017, amid ongoing efforts to combat doping and initiatives aimed at making athletics there more integrity-driven.
