Bernardo Silva tops the list of candidates to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo as captain of Portugal’s national team, following Ronaldo’s announcement that he was retiring from international football. Silva has 115 caps, the most of any player in the current squad. Coach Jorge Jesus said the captaincy order is based on the number of appearances and named four other candidates alongside Silva: Bruno Fernandes (97 caps), Rúben Dias (84), João Cancelo (77) and Rúben Neves (73).
