Iraq and South Korea at 1986 World Cup
The 1986 World Cup held in Mexico saw Iraq participate for the first time. The team qualified for the tournament for the first time after defeating Syria in the Asian qualifiers. They competed in a tough group alongside Mexico, Belgium, and Paraguay. The team delivered a commendable performance, with their only goal of the tournament scored by Ahmed Rady in a match against Belgium. Despite losing to Paraguay and Mexico, Iraq left a positive impression of Iraqi football in its first-ever World Cup appearance. Conversely, South Korea returned to the World Cup after more than three decades of absence, competing in a group alongside Italy, Argentina, and Bulgaria. They achieved their first Asian point in history after a draw with Bulgaria and faced a tough battle in their final match against Italy.
