Excluding Azmoun Provokes World Cup Debate
The absence of Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun from Iran's initial roster for the 2026 World Cup has sparked widespread controversy, with interpretations suggesting that the decision may be linked to his political stances during the 2022 protests and his support for demonstrations, despite the coach affirming that the reasons are solely technical. It is worth noting that Azmoun, a prominent player, has scored 57 goals in 91 international matches and has played for major clubs such as Roma and Zenit before transferring to Shabab Al Ahli. The player has expressed support for the Iranian people through social media, and reports indicate that official pressures to reinstate him to the national team have diminished, as the team prepares for the World Cup in a group that includes Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt.
