AI officiates NBA games
Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA), announced that the league is moving towards using artificial intelligence technologies to automate the decision-making process for determining when the ball has gone out of bounds. The goal is to accelerate the pace of games and reduce disputes over possession. This technology will be implemented through an automated system supported by advanced cameras, which will quickly identify the team entitled to possession instantly. The role of referees will remain essential for assessing physical fouls and interpreting contacts. As part of its efforts to update officiating, the league aims to improve the flow of the games while maintaining the vital role of human referees.
