The article addresses the issue of excessive government employment in Iraq and its negative impact on the national economy. It explains that approximately 40% of the workforce in the country is employed in the public sector, despite its weak efficiency and productivity, and its high costs which consume a large portion of the general budget. The article mainly links the increase in government employment to the scarcity of job opportunities in the private sector, and Iraqis' dependence on government jobs as a source of security and stability. This reliance exacerbates financial pressure and limits private sector growth. It also reveals that the poor performance of public institutions and the economy’s heavy dependence on oil contribute to inefficiency and hinder economic growth, while societal changes after 2003 and the decreased emphasis on vocational and technical skills increase market fragility. Ultimately, the article stresses the importance of diversifying the economic structure and improving resource management to ensure more sustainable and effective employment and productivity.
