The Dortmund Regional Court has sentenced a 34-year-old Syrian man in a case involving the murder of his neighbor in Lunen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The defendant fired nine shots, resulting in the victim's death. It was found that the accused was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia in a severe psychotic state at the time of the crime, leading the court to deem him fully not criminally responsible. Instead of imprisonment, the court ordered his placement in a forensic psychiatric facility for treatment and supervision, with his condition continuously monitored due to the seriousness of his mental state and its potential danger to society. This case is an example of the German legal system employing a special procedure that combines community protection with involuntary treatment, based on the defendant's mental health, rather than conventional punishment.
