The Hamawi family from Syria in Nuremberg, Germany, faces the risk of losing their source of income after a decision to revoke their falafel and shawarma kiosk license, which they operate in the city’s market. The suspension comes as a result of ongoing construction works that have relocated the kiosks to a temporary site until the end of 2029. New regulations require maintaining sightlines and storefront facades, which clash with the temporary site’s layout. This has led to the suspension of several kiosk permits, including that of the family. Majd Hamawi, who helps run the kiosk, described the situation as a "disaster," as the family continues to seek a solution that would allow them to keep operating. The issue has garnered widespread attention on social media platforms, with thousands of likes and comments. However, the alternatives suggested by the city are impractical for their business.
