The article discusses the security risks associated with the increasing influence of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, especially as it nears taking over the Ministry of the Interior in Saxony-Anhalt, where it enjoys a support rate of 40% in polls. There are concerns that this could give the party access to sensitive security files, including investigations into its leadership and cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies, thereby threatening Germany's security. The federal government is taking precautionary measures, such as reducing information exchange between intelligence agencies and imposing restrictions on the regional minister in Saxony-Anhalt. Additionally, efforts are underway to expand political alliances to prevent the party from forming a government or gaining access to critical security positions. However, these measures face legal challenges and concerns over the party’s potential access to classified information, especially amid growing fears of sensitive data falling into the hands of hostile states like Russia.
