The 2026-2027 school year has begun in Syria, with a focus on rehabilitating school buildings, unifying curricula, and providing books and supplies to accommodate hundreds of thousands of students returning from abroad and to address educational gaps. Preparations also include improving safety in schools, especially in war-damaged areas, by removing debris and unexploded ordnance that have caused casualties among children. Additionally, psychological and educational support programs are being implemented to enhance inclusive education opportunities. There is a move towards standardizing national curricula and rehabilitating and expanding the school network, as data indicates that more than 6,000 schools need maintenance, although many schools have been reopened in various regions. Syria faces ongoing challenges in ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment, with over 2.45 million children still out of school, highlighting the continued need for efforts to ensure access to quality education.
