The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved a historic victory in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, securing over 44% of the votes, surpassing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which received approximately 18%. This was also the party's best performance to date in a German state election, winning nearly 41 of the 83 seats, approaching an absolute majority, which requires 42 seats. This keeps the possibility of a single-party government open, though it remains uncertain due to other parties' refusal to form a coalition with them. Conversely, the CDU experienced a significant decline compared to its results in 2021 and now faces the challenge of forming a coalition government. Amid an exceptional turnout of around 80%, this victory serves as a strong message against traditional parties and the federal government, reflecting the growing support for the AfD in a region that has seen a decline in support for the previously dominant parties.
