Syrian network sets standards for absentia trial of Assad

The Syrian Network for Human Rights focused its report on the standards of absentia trials for Syrian officials, particularly Bashar Assad and Maher Assad. It underscored the necessity of applying fundamental legal guarantees to ensure justice. The report explained that the current situation relates to the concept of "structural absence," where it is difficult to reach or genuinely try the accused due to political and human rights factors, with gaps in notification procedures and legal representation. The network recommended the need to strengthen national and international legislation to guarantee fair trials, emphasizing the importance of continued international judicial cooperation while respecting the rights of the accused and ensuring trial guarantees despite the current challenges.
