The magazine "Der Spiegel" announced that three prisons in North Rhine-Westphalia will allow inmates to use the internet for the first time, with restrictions and close supervision. The goal is to enhance educational, social, and security communication. Special rooms equipped with secure devices will be provided, and the internet will be used for educational purposes, communication, and submitting requests electronically. Continuous monitoring by staff will be implemented, and access to certain websites will be restricted. The project aims to reduce inmate transfers and improve security by limiting the exchange of printed messages and decreasing the entry of illegal substances via the internet.
