The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party achieved a historic success in the Saxony-Anhalt state elections, securing 43.8% of the votes and winning 39 out of 83 seats, surpassing Chancellor Mert's party, which received 17.2%. The party's leader, Alice Weidel, announced her ambition to transform the party into Germany’s leading political force, aiming to achieve 40% or more in the upcoming federal elections with the goal of governing the country. Meanwhile, party leader Mert faces increasing pressure after his party’s losses, but he refuses to resign or change his stance, still rejecting cooperation with the AfD. Saxony-Anhalt’s results are seen as a significant political test, especially as Sarah Wagenknecht’s alliance is preparing to engage in talks with all parties, including the AfD, though no agreement has yet been reached to form a coalition.
