The Freedom Institute in Damascus has approved separating male and female students in the middle and high school levels, in order to improve behavior and reduce issues such as bullying, harassment, and fights, according to the school administration. This decision comes after reports of inappropriate conduct and students being distracted by romantic stories, as well as a decline in female students due to family rejection of co-education. The measure has sparked widespread debate about the increasing trend towards conservatism and religious strictness in Syrian society, especially amid concerns that it may lead to the imposition of conservative standards within schools and public institutions during the transitional phase, in the context of a growing practice of gender segregation in various regions across the country.
