Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that the results of the Saxony-Anhalt state election represent a "painful turning point" for Germany, expressing her sadness as a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Merkel suggested that democratic parties should focus on explaining their political programs and clarifying solutions to issues rather than concentrating on strategies to prevent the Alternative for Germany (AfD) from gaining power. She warned that feelings and impressions are sometimes treated as facts, emphasizing the need to rely on verifiable facts in political discourse. Merkel also pointed out that the economic situation in Saxony-Anhalt has not improved despite low unemployment and increased personal satisfaction, as AfD supporters believe that people do not feel this improvement.
