British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline has announced a plan to close its historic vaccine manufacturing plant in Dresden, Germany, by summer 2028, risking the loss of approximately 640 to 650 jobs. The decision is justified by the decline in global demand for certain vaccines and an increase in production capacity, as vaccine production for influenza is being shifted to a Canadian site in Ste-Foy. The plant is considered a longstanding facility in Germany's pharmaceutical industry, currently producing two million doses weekly of influenza and hepatitis vaccines, with exports to more than twenty countries. A labor union expressed its opposition to the plan, warning of the loss of valuable industrial expertise, and called for alternative negotiations, especially in light of the recent loss of around 4,250 jobs in the Saxony region, which has heightened fears of a decline in the area's industrial sector.
